Beats Music subscription based online music streaming service launched

Remember the bass-friendly headphones and in-ear phones by Beats Audio? Maybe the popular Beats by Dr Dre series? Well, Beats has now finally expanded to subscription-based online music streaming.

The newly released Beats Music app, available on the iTunes App Store, is something on the lines of the already available Google Play Music, Spotify and Rdio. The Android app will also be released soon.

The big question to be asked is, with a plethora of online music streaming options available, why did Beats launch its own, and how does Beats Music stand out?

The answer, according to Beats, lies in the fact that there are plenty of people who havent jumped onto the subscription bandwagon yet. Also, after working with the likes of Trent Reznor and MOG (which will be shutting down on April 15), it feels that it has a lot more to offer. The Beats Music software will revolve around creating music streaming based on the user experience, and also personal and preferred choices of music. The answer to whether it will work will have to be seen.

The features that are offered with Beats Music are worth taking a note of. There are over 20 million songs available from the various music genres. A user also has the option of listening to a song instantly, or saving it and listening to it offline. Unsure users can turn to Beats Music to help create the right playlists and make the right choices. The Just for You feature has a series of genres and artistes hand-picked, or curated for the user by a team of Beats Music curators.

Depending upon the mood of a person, there is a feature that allows a user to change the sentence or playlist to match how he or she is feeling. That in turn helps generate a personalised playlist. Another feature, Highlights, allows a user to check the latest happenings in the world of music. An unsure user can also use Find It to reach the perfect playlist based on genre and the kind of activity being done. Share allows a user to share the music on Beats Music as well as social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. This could be a handy feature for the new streaming service.

Beats Music is a subscription-based service available for $9.99 (roughly Rs. 650) a month on the iTunes App Store, and is initially free for seven days - so users can try it.

In addition, there is a spark of joy for users of the Windows Phones. Beats has released Beats Yo! for the platform, a drum computer simulation with 16 sample pads available for free. The features that it offers are also pretty interesting too. Four-track recording, cutting and arranging recorded four-bar loops and the ability to save and load them, makes an entry.

Amongst other features, Beats Yo! offers adjustable tempo, a metronome to keep time and a real-time check to fix any missed beats. Also it gives a shot in the arm to Windows Phones, apps which has still to lure the top developers in the industry to create apps for its devices. The WAV files that will be eventually stored on the device can be easily transferred via the MusicBeats Yo folder that is created within the Windows phones flash storage.

The Beats Yo! drum kit is free for download and use. However, throwing in a bit of the commercial aspect has Beats Yo! offering in-app purchases where additional drum-kits can be bought. Of course, if one chooses not to purchase, they are left with just one drum-kit (the original free downloaded one). The app is only compatible with Windows Phone 8 devices as of now

Renault to develop electric cars for Israel

Carlos Ghosn- Renault SA Chief ExecutiveThe Renault-Nissan alliance on Monday signed a deal to begin mass producing electric cars as part of an Israeli-led project to develop alternative energy sources and slash oil dependency.

Renault-Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said the cars, with a range of about 100 km in city driving and up to 160 km on the highway, will accelerate from zero to 100 kph in 13 seconds and have a top speed of 110 kph -- similar to many gasoline-powered cars.

Ghosn said a key reason why the company chose Israel to launch the project is because 90% of Israelis drive less than 70 km a day and all major urban centers are within 150 km of each other. For Israel the cars would mean less dependency on oil imports, mostly coming from Russia.

The cars, to be made in Europe, will run on a battery developed by Nissan and Japans and will be available in 2011. A prototype is already on the road in Israel and various models will be sold by Renault and Nissan.

"It will be the most environmentally friendly mass-produced car on the market," Ghosn said at a Fuel Free Transportation ceremony at the office of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, adding the main appeal of the cars is that they were as "normal as possible" while operating quietly.

He said the car would cost the same or less than comparable gasoline engine autos and would have a lifetime warranty.

Ghosn said Renault-Nissan will also market the cars in yet to be determined European countries and Asia and later to the United States.

"We expect this car to be successful," Ghosn told reporters. "We want to make sure we mass market 10,000 to 20,000 cars a year in Israel ... We are determined to make it a success."

ENERGY SUBSCRIPTIONS
Israels government will offer tax incentives on the cars and Project Better Place, a venture-backed company, will set up a recharging grid using electricity from renewable sources.

"The state of Israel has set itself the goal of making our lives here better and cleaner, with less dependence on gasoline and petroleum," Olmert said. "By the end of the next decade, we will be completely free of petroleum and its by-products as the fuel which powers transportation in Israel."

Project Better Place is headed by former SAP executive Shai Agassi, who said Israels grid would be powered by 200 megawatts generated by wind and solar power sources.

"For the first time in history, all the conditions necessary for electric vehicles to be successfully mass-marketed will be brought together in a partnership between the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Project Better Place in Israel," the two sides said in a statement.

Consumers will buy their car and subscribe to an energy supply, including the use of the battery, on the basis of kilometers driven, similar to the way mobile phones are sold.

Israeli President Shimon Peres said he wanted Israel to push forward with the electric car plan because oil has become the "greatest polluter of our age and the greatest financier of terrorism."

California-based Project Better Place said it will set up a network of 500,000 charging points in Israel. The cars computer will indicate when recharging is needed and the nearest charging point.

The initial $200 million investment in Project Better Place is led by holding company Israel Corp and includes investment bank Morgan Stanley, venture capital firm Vantage Point and a group of private investors.

Israel Corp, which will invest $100 million, said it had signed agreements with the other investors. The Ofer family, which controls Israel Corp, will invest $30 million through a private firm while the other investors will put in $70 million.

Google Lively A Social 3 D virtual world unveils with video

8th July2008, Google launched its own world -- a virtual world, to be exact. Lively, which Google likes to call a "virtual experience," allows you to create an avatar, decorate your own virtual room, invite friends to your room and do things youve always dreamed of, like blow up oil barrels on a deserted island.

Unlike popular virtual worlds such as Second Life, Lively doesnt require you to download new software. All you need is a browser plug-in. The service is also more distributed than Second Life: Its rooms will live on Web pages on Facebook and other sites, so you might stumble across them when browsing the Internet. Rooms can be private spaces, with entry by invitation only, or open-topic rooms, where you can meet people interested in discussing topics you love, like Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston or Google. It also ties into other Google services. You can stream YouTube videos into your virtual living room or post your Picasa pictures on your walls.

Its easy to choose avatars from a number of different options, including a turban-wearing bear. Its easy to change their clothes, hair color and skin color. Its easy to drag and drop furniture and lava lamps to position them around your room. Want your turban-wearing bear to wave to the hot mama across the room? Just type wave. Want him to giggle? Just type laugh.

Lively looks hip, too. Its kind of a combination between anime and a Disney movie, with wide-eyed avatars and colorful, angular scenery. Chat bubbles are brightly colored and attached to avatars with long stems.

All of which leads to the big question: Is Lively going to be the site that finally brings virtual worlds into the mainstream? Probably, said Chris Sherman, executive director of Virtual Worlds Management, an industry trade group. "With a player like Google jumping into this, youre going to see a lot more people understand this space and pay attention to it," he said.

Hands on with Microsoft Office Live Workspace

MS office live workspaceMicrosoft is synonymous with the ubiquitous Windows operating system. But its Microsoft Office productivity suite pulls in more revenue than any version of Windows. Competition from Web-hosted productivity applications like Google Docs and Zoho Office has changed the rules of the application-suite game, however, threatening Microsofts desktop application revenues and forcing it to address the growing popularity of Web-hosted applications with new features and products.

The obvious move would be to offer free, ad-supported, feature-limited online versions of Offices flagship applications designed to compete head-on with Googles and Zohos word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs. Microsofts free Office Live Workspace, however, takes a different tack by providing private and public shared online file areas, or workspaces, that are tightly linked to Offices desktop applications via a downloadable plug-in.

Though it lacks advanced workflow, communications, and project management features, Office Live Workspace has more in common with collaborative Web services like Basecamp and Central Desktop than it does with Googles or Zohos online suites. Currently ad-free, Microsoft says the site may eventually include advertising.

Microsoft office live workspace demoOffice Live Workspace anticipates the kinds of jobs youre likely to collaborate on, providing prefab workspace templates geared to specific business, school, and home tasks such as organizing a group meeting, launching a product, writing a term paper, throwing a party, or managing a little-league team. Individual templates contain document templates designed for the task, such as a project proposal outline in Word or a presentation in PowerPoint.

Office Live Workspace supports Excel files, too, though none of the templates available when we reviewed the site were Excel files. On the other hand, the service doesnt support Microsofts Access database format, which is too bad--Access users looking to delegate data entry and to simplify reporting tasks might benefit greatly from an online database-sharing arrangement.

You can view documents in the three supported Office file types online, but to edit the files, you must download and open them in your local copy of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, or in a compatible suite such as OpenOffice.org, and then reupload them when youre done editing.

Emulating a handy feature pioneered by Zoho Office, the service also lets you open, edit, and save files directly from your Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007 applications to your online folders, using a downloadable toolbar plug-in. Besides working in the supported Office file types, you can create, view, and edit several other types of files--Events, Contacts, Task Lists, and Notes--via the Web interface, and sync these with the corresponding information types stored in your local copy of Microsoft Outlook. The site lets you create one other file type--a spreadsheet-like list--and export it to Excel format if you wish. You can upload other file types, too. The site simply displays an error message if you try to view or edit unsupported file formats.

MS office live workspace demoIf you work with only a few collaborators, Office Live Workspace provides just the right combination of file-sharing controls and ease of use. As the workspace administrator, you create a new shared workspace and then invite other users by e-mail to join it, either as viewers (who can see but not modify files) or as editors (who can see, create, and modify files). You can share workspaces with invited users, make them public, or keep them private. Files are easy to move from one workspace to another. Though you cant share individual workspace files, you can share individual files that are stored in the default Documents folder.

Office Live Workspace displays a log of file creation, editing, and deletion activity, and the administrator can retrieve an earlier version of a file if an editing snafu occurs. If you add the SharedView utility, a small download thats still in beta, you can share your screen and its applications with other workspace users--a feature that several other collaboration services offer as well. Only one user at a time can control and edit a document via SharedView, however. If you need tighter controls over file access, or other workflow tools like e-mail reminders of project milestones and due dates, choose a more powerful collaboration service.

Youll also want to look elsewhere if your projects involve lots of large files. While other online storage services--including Google, Zoho, and Microsofts own Windows Live Spaces--offer gigabytes of free storage, Office Live Workspace gives you just 500MB, with individual file size limited to 25MB. But if you and a few of your coworkers or family members want to collaborate in a lightweight fashion using Microsoft Office apps, Microsofts unique response to Web-hosted applications could be a free and easy no-brainer.

HTC Magic

HTC Magic Google Android smartphone is introduced with a Vodafone simlock. The modest yet colorful Vodafone package displays a small picture of the smartphone itself, including the phones main features. The Magic Android does not really look like an actual HTC Smartphone. It has an elegant design and feels extremely solid. The phone also provides a perfect hand fit, and the weight is not bothersome.

In addition to several buttons below the touchscreen, we also come across a trackball here, as we have seen before on other phones, for example the Blackberry mobile phones. Standard included with the HTC Magic are a neat leather pouch, a USB lead, a headset, a charger, an 8GB memory card and a quick start guide. As mentioned earlier, the HTC Magic runs on the Android platform, which is why this phone is also called the second Google phone, or the HTC G2.

You can simply drag up the menu from the bottom, instead of via the menu button below the touchscreen, as you would expect at first. This menu button opens a new menu for every application, for example; the browser allows you to either open or refresh an Internet page, and Google Maps lets you change the map mode or search for a location. The menus structure is quite easy, although the combination with the menu button does require some practice.

It seems not everything is stored in the same way, however it would not call it complicated. Its just a little bit different than what we are used to luckily enough, however, it is stable and fast. Everything runs smoothly and upon opening the menu, you will find a large number of icons. In addition to the standard functions, such as settings and gallery, also Google applications such as Google Maps, Google Talk, Gmail and YouTube can be found.

iPhone shortage supply woes or new model

iPhone picsApples iPhone is in short supply at many of its U.S. stores, which could indicate a component shortage or a clearing of shelves for a new model, analysts said on Wednesday.

Bernstein Research said its iPhone supply checks showed that the multifunction device appeared to be out of stock at Apples U.S. stores and its online store, which could lead to lost sales of up to 40,000 units a week in the event of a prolonged shortage.

Sacconaghi said the impact so far was limited, estimating the average Apple store was out of stock for only a few days during the March quarter, and that supplies appeared to be fine at stores of wireless carrier partner AT&T Inc.

"In our view, the most likely explanation for this unusual situation is a production shortfall, possibly due to a component shortage," analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote in a note.

Apple declined to confirm if there was an iPhone shortage, but spokesman Steve Dowling said: "We are working to replenish iPhone supplies as quickly as we can and our stores continue to receive shipments almost every day."

Recent reports of iPhone shortages have fueled speculation that Apple is readying a new version of the device that will run on faster 3G wireless networks.

Apple could introduce a new iPhone in June or July, about three months earlier than previously expected, said American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu, citing checks with unidentified supply chain sources.

"What gives us higher conviction in the accelerated timetable is that iPhone inventory levels appear fairly lean, which is consistent with Apples tendency to wind down inventory ahead of an update," Wu wrote in a note.

Wu forecast Apple would sell 11 million phones by the end of 2008, 10% more than the companys stated goal, thanks to a new model, wider adoption among businesses, and price cuts.

Apple shares fell 1.4% to $147.38 in early afternoon trading on Nasdaq. The stock is up 19% over the past month but is still nearly 25% below its level three months ago amid concerns that a slowing economy will dampen consumer spending.

Motorola XOOM Snap Review

Lucky dad. He told me a few days ago that his boss bought him the Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi 32GB, so he asked me to "enlighten" him on the tablet. Yesterday, he passed it to me and told me that I could "blog about it like what I always did for other gadgets".

XOOM seen with the original Folio Case

To me, there is nothing exciting about XOOM since I already had experienced the Android Honeycomb on the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer (TF101). The Motorola XOOM runs on stock Android 3.0 firmware, which makes it rather uninteresting as compared to the Transformer. There arent any extra widgets or pre-installed entertaining apps or multimedia content like what ASUS provided. But heres what I gathered from my snappy hands-on experience (less than 3 man hours to be exact).

Seeing double? The left is a life-sized brochure.

Screen - unfortunately, Dad has already applied a matt screen protector, which instantly makes the screen less appealing compared to the Transformer. I wont go into further discussion, since comparison could be deemed unfair. If thats any lesson learnt, it would be this: applying a screen protector would reduce the visual quality. I hope I am right, or else that would mean the XOOM is indeed having a less-stellar display.

Hardware buttons - XOOM has a large power button behind the left speaker which is within easy reach of the left hand finger. Kudos to that for ergonomic design. In contrast, the volume buttons are miserable in size, and I find it hard to press them easily. A microSD and/or SIM compartment on the top is covered by a cap, which reveals a bit of the circuit board. At the bottom, there is the micro-USB port. micro-HDMI port, and charger ports. The camera flash is a nice-to-have but I doubt anyone would be seriously using a tablet for flash photography.

Yes, I used a XOOM brochure for comparison, but hey thats to scale.

Size - XOOM is the smallest 10.1" tablet in the market, thanks to a thinner bezel. Its even smaller than the iPad even with a larger screen.

Boasting "Dual Core Technology". Eh... which Honeycomb tablet doesnt have it?

Interface - it runs on stock Android firmware, so nothing special compared to the ASUS Transformer. Gotta go to the Android Market to download apps before you can enjoy the tablet, though there arent many apps that are optimised for Android tablets.I did install Zinio as they are offering free magazine downloads for a limited time. Strange though, the number of free magazines are different from the Transformer. Was the Zinio offering differentiated by tablet brands?

Zinio on XOOM gives me 3 free publications, compared to dozens on the Transformer

Usage experience does not deviate much from Transformer: the occasional crash warning, the jittery video playback on some encoding formats. Most of the times, the tablet runs smoothly as expected. I do prefer the size of the XOOM compared to the Transformer.

My thoughts - The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer is definitely more useful for me, because it comes with a modular keyboard dock and pre-installed ASUS content. XOOM costs S$100 more: you lose the dock but gain 32GB built-in storage memory and smaller footprint.

I returned the XOOM to my Dad the following day so that he can enjoy the gadget. Unfortunately he does not have Wi-Fi at home, which is a huge pity, for the Internet is the ultimate gateway to the tablet experience.

Chester owns the Transformer tablet and is also a fan of TRANSFORMERS toyline. Follow him at http://www.twitter.com/musicdiary/ as he is scheduled for some more gadgets review courtesy of xinmsn.

Head of Nokia US PureView coming to Nokia Lumia phones

Another Nokia executive is teasing the addition of PureView technology to the Finnish companys Lumia line of phones and yet again there are no commitments when it comes to dates when such a device might get announced.

Chris Webber, President of Nokia USA and Head of Marketing for North America, talked about the future of Nokia and their plans to expand their market share. PureView is part of the plan and Nokia is working closely with Microsoft to make sure that the technologyworks exactly right (we approve as long as the phones dont look like this).

Webber once again points out its not about the 41MP that was arguably the biggest attention grabber, but its the oversampling technology instead. This lends some credence that there will be PureView cameras with a lower raw resolution (which would reduce the maximum lossless zoom, but the other advantages of the technology shouldnt be affected).

You can watch the 20+ minute interview with Webber here - he talks about PureView a little after 3 minutes in.

You might want to listen to the rest of the interview too, he talks about how the market has moved to a battle of ecosystems instead of battle of individual devices and how Windows 8, Xbox and otherMicrosoft properties are beneficial for Nokias Windows-centric strategy.

New updates to Google com for the iPhone

Unless youre living on a deserted island -- and maybe even if you are -- you know about Apples 3G iPhone and App Store launch last week. Hopefully you know about the Google Mobile App that we launched last week, as well. And some of you may have noticed that we also released a new version of Google.com for the iPhone and iPod touch.

At Google, improving the speed of our applications and user experience is a top priority. The new Google.com for the iPhone browser now loads twice as fast as before -- and not just over 3G or Wi-Fi but also EDGE. Weve optimized the page for fast searching, while still providing easy access to other Google applications including Gmail, Calendar, Reader, and many others under the More tab. We also improved the user interface so that theres more room on the page for search results. Take a look at the screen shot below to see how weve eliminated wasted space.

Also, when you click on a search result, the destination web site now opens in the same browser window that you conducted your search with. This means that you can instantly return to your search results or the Google home page by simply pressing the back button of your browser.

Finally, you can now access any of the application tabs directly by adding them to your iPhone Home Screen. Weve created cool new icons for all the applications. Simply go to www.google.com in your browser, tap on any of the application tabs, click the "+" button, and select "Add to Home Screen." The icons will appear on your iPhone Home Screen allowing you to go directly to the application with a tap of your finger. Collect the whole set!

The new version of Google.com works on your 3G iPhone as well as the original iPhone and iPod touch. If you use Google Apps, you can also access this new version by going to www.google.com/m/a/your-domain.com, where "your-domain.com" is replaced with your actual domain name.

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone hadding to Europe

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone will be getting Europe in the Autumn known simply as the 6760 Slide when it is released and if the early word is correct, it will have a few feature tweaks too.

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone will be getting Europe in the Autumn with clever messaging phone, suited to those who live for their social networks and love sending SMS and email on the move. Connection to your Exchange server, most email services and online networks such as Twitter and Facebook plus Google Talk and Windows Live IM systems, provides the 6760 with more than enough appeal on the software side and although criticised for its unconventional looks, we like the fact the S60-powered device doesn’t conform.

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone
will be getting Europe in the Autumn On the hardware side, the screen is a 2.4? QVGA item which works in both landscape and portrait, Assisted GPS is built in and on the rear of the phone you’ll find a 3.2 megapixel camera. If this information is correct, then it trumps the Surge’s 2 megapixel camera. Oddly, nothing is mentioned about 3G or Wi-Fi, however if Nokia want the 6760 to be taken seriously, we can’t see both of these being omitted.

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone
will be getting Europe in the Autumn will be available in black, red and white, and we should hear a solid release date soon.

Broadcasting is changing to digital and the UK’s existing analogue service is set to be switched off by 2012. We’re promised more channels, high-definition content and exciting new services.

While many people will simply choose a set-top box, digital TV and the PC are natural bedfellows, allowing you to use the PC to record programmes and put it at the heart of an entertainment system.

Take a look around PC stores, though, and you’ll get the impression that where TV on your PC is concerned, terrestrial reception is the only game in town, with analogue or Freeview (DVB-T) tuners easily available. But what if you want channels that aren’t available on Freeview, or you’re in one of the many areas where you can’t even get a decent signal?

If you can’t get Freeview, want to sample the BBC’s HD service, or just fancy a few extra free channels, a satellite receiver for your PC may be the solution.

Bringing Debian to Google Compute Engine

This was an exciting week for the Debian community who released Debian 7.0 “wheezy” that brings big improvements including hardened security, improved 32/64-bit compatibility and addresses a lot of community feedback. Today we’re adding Debian images for Google Compute Engine. Debian, in collaboration with us, is providing images for both Debian 7.0 “wheezy” and the previous stable release, Debian 6.0 “squeeze.” This support will make it easy for anyone using Debian today to migrate their workloads onto Compute Engine.

For fast performance and to reduce bandwidth costs, Google is hosting a Debian package mirror for use by Google Compute Engine Debian instances. We’ve updated our docs and will support Debian via our usual support options or you can also check out what Debian offers.

We are continually evaluating other operating systems that we can enable with Compute Engine. However, going forward, Debian will be the default image type for Compute Engine. We look forward to hearing your feedback.

Scalr and Google Compute Engine

Todays guest post is from Sebastian Stadil, CEO of Scalr. The company providies a web-based control panel for cloud infrastructure that serves as an interface between end users and the multiple cloud platforms that they use. In this post, Sebastian discusses benchmarks they conducted to analyze Compute Engine performance.

At Scalr, we build a web-based control panel for cloud infrastructure, which serves as an interface between end users and the multiple cloud platforms that they use. Engineers use Scalr to achieve significant productivity gains, and IT departments use it to drive and control cloud adoption.

One of our customers — grandcentrix — used Scalr with Google Compute Engine a few months back. They were building the backend of the companion mobile application for the Eurovision song contest using both Compute Engine and Scalr. Our experience was documented on the Google Cloud Platform blog.

No random hiccups with Google. Only high and stable performance.

In a few words: this was the first time Eurovison had a companion app, so they had no idea how much traffic they’d have. Fortunately, our load tests had shown that Compute Engine was a predictable high performer with fast provisioning times, so all we had to do was ensure that the application architecture would scale horizontally.

Eurovision was a success, and we’re looking forward to taking on such a challenge again. Why? Because we feel very comfortable using Google Compute Engine. It just doesn’t surprise you, and delivers extremely consistent performance.

We’ve recently conducted performance benchmarks on persistent volumes across multiple cloud providers. For volumes, performance is only part of the story. Stability matters a lot, too. What good is a high performing volume if it fails to perform 1/10th of the time? Not much!

Using Google Compute Engine, every single volume performs the same, every hour of every day. If their throughput is sufficient when you run your tests, you can know for sure that Google volumes won’t let you down when you need them.

By the numbers: the benchmarks

Below, you’ll find graphs that compare the performance dispersion for IOPS, bandwidth, and latency for Google Compute Engine and EC2 volumes. This is basically a measurement of how consistent disk performance has been over hundreds of 10-minute disk-performance measurements.

What you’ll see is that Google volumes offer significantly more consistent performance than their AWS counterparts, including PIOPs volumes!

Here are the graphs. Lower dispersion means more consistent performance.

Note: we’re still in the process of adding benchmarks on sequential workloads for PIOPs volumes, but they have been benchmarked for random workloads.

Are you trying out Google Compute Engine?

Google Compute Engine, EC2, and Rackspace aren’t API-compatible, so if you intend to start using Google’s Cloud for your business today, you’ll probably need to rewrite quite a few integrations.

If that’s the case, you might want to look at the Scalr Cloud Management Platform. Using Scalr lets you design infrastructure and policies once, and use them with any cloud platform.

We actually used Scalr to run the benchmarks we presented here. If you’re interested, you could watch this talk from the OpenStack Summit, where we presented how we did it.

You can of course learn more about Scalr on our website, or request a POC.

Finance for Android App

Just over a year ago, during a user experience research trip for Google Finance, we were at the home of a stay-at-home mom / day trader. She was frustrated that there were "personal blackout periods" in the trading day when she was entirely disconnected from the stock market -- for example, while she was ferrying kids around or at lunch with friends. Her situation wasnt unique. During our research visits, we had been hearing similar concerns from people who need to stay connected to the market. With the hope of resolving this dilemma, we started to design and build a finance application for the Android platform in our Google 20% time.

As the Finance for Android application took shape, and the team of 20% engineers grew, we added more features with the aim of allowing users to get stock quotes, market data, and news as fast as possible. If you are following the markets throughout the day, check out the real-time streaming quotes in your portfolio, fast stock look-ups with search auto-suggestion, and recent quotes to make it even easier receive quotes on-the-go. For each stock, you can see detailed quotes, charts and news, and any change you make to your portfolio automatically syncs up with the Google Finance website. So now you dont have to worry about setting up a separate portfolio on your phone.

If youre in the US, you can now download Finance for Android from Android Market.

Search with My Location for iPhone 3 0 And All that Jazz

I recently visited NYC where I met up with my friend Joanne, a jazz singer with a wonderful 1920s throwback style. I wanted to find a jazz club close to my hotel on the west side for us to meet. The problem was that I hadnt lived in Manhattan for 5 years, and my memory for places was failing me.

At Google, we want to make searching the world around you as easy and informative as searching the web. Thats why were introducing Search with My Location for iPhone 3.0. Now if I want to know which jazz clubs are near me, I dont have to specify a location - I just search for "jazz clubs".

As of today, when you visit www.google.com from Safari on your iPhone 3.0, you can choose to turn on My Location by tapping on the link on the homepage. When you tap on the "update" link, your location will be updated and displayed right there on the homepage. Whenever you want to refresh your location, just tap the "update" link. Testing this in New York, my search for "jazz clubs" returned a handful of places within walking distance. I picked one, tapped the phone number, made a reservation, and we were set for the night.

As always, your privacy is one of our top concerns. Google won’t use your location in search unless you explicitly opt in. And you can always disable the feature from Preferences at the bottom of the homepage.

Search with My Location from Safari is available in English in the US and UK. Look for other country and language combinations soon. You can also search with My Location using Google Mobile App, available from the iPhone App Store.

New Belle update for S 3 devices coming on February 8

A while back, Nokias Twitter account jumped the gun when announcing the release of the Belle update for older Nokia smartphones. Lets hope this time its for real - Nokias Vietnamese site announced that Belle is coming on February 8 for the following models: N8, E7, X7, E6, C6-01. Nokia Vietnams Facebook page confirmed it.

However the page on Nokias site is now gone, while the Facebook post is still up.
We know the Belle update is coming in February, thats the latest info from Nokia. The exact date is not clear though, their UK page just says "soon" and adds the Nokia 500 to the list of updateable phones.
Nokia is already shipping new units of those devices with Nokia Belle out of the box, so the update is clearly ready. Were not sure whats the hold up or which regions will get it first.
We cant find a mention of the update coming on February 8 on any other regional Nokia web site either. If you spot it anywhere, post a link in the comments.

PiPO M9 RK3188 Quad Core 2GB RAM Android Tablet real shots

Tablets World have reported before the PiPO M9 10.1 Android tablet. Today we show more real shots of this tablet.
When we got the the package box of PiPO M9, we guess the PiPO may want to emphasize that this tablet is ultra-thin body design. Cause the box is really very slim. It even puts the all the extra accessories into a seperate box. And we can feel the M9 is really very thin and light, the actual weight is 586g, which is even 76g lighter than the new iPads 662g weight! And the back of PiPO M9 is mostly metallic material!

PiPO M9 is front and rear dual cameras design. And in front should also have a light-sensor, which would be very helpful for e-book reader users.

The rear camera is 5.0 mega pixel and has a flash light as well to provide more brightness when in dark situation.

Rich expansion ports like many other main stream Android tablets.HDMI, TF, Headset etc.

The "non-slip" design on the edge!

The thickness is similar with the new iPad. The new iPad is 9.4mm!

Bottom is the PiPO m9 package box, we guess by eyes is about 2cm thickness!

Multisite hosting using Protocol Forwarding Compute Engine’s new forwarding capability

Serving 1 million requests per second using Compute Engine sure is awesome. But what about scaling in the other direction and serving more than one website from the same instance? A handy new feature called Protocol Forwarding makes this possible on Compute Engine. It enables you to attach multiple Internet IP addresses to an instance. This way you can configure your webserver to host content that belong to different sites, even with SSL.

Protocol Forwarding is a new addition to Compute Engines growing collection of forwarding capabilities (including Layer-3 Load Balancing). In addition to attaching multiple Internet IP addresses to a single instance without network address translation (NAT), it can also forward select IP protocols to the virtual machine instances. The supported protocols are TCP, UDP, SCTP and IPSec (ESP/AH). A sharp-eyed reader can tell that, when used together with advanced routing, Protocol Forwarding simplifies the virtual private network (VPN) setup that connects your outside servers to Compute Engine network.

Protocol Forwarding and Load Balancing share many of the same underpinnings, including the same top-level API resource called Forwarding Rules. The best way to learn how to use it is to follow the quickstart guide. Upon completion, you should have a web server on a single instance hosting three different websites with three different Internet IP addresses.

Pricing for Protocol Forwarding is the same as Layer-3 Load Balancing. In fact, you can enjoy both features at no cost until the end of January, 2014. Please read more about pricing and promotion details.

On behalf of the Google Cloud Platform team, I wish everyone a productive and rewarding 2014!

MediaTek working on MT6575

It seems that MediaTek has been working on a new chipset - MT6575 - as a response against Qualcomms MSM7227A. Its said that it will feature a single core ARM Cortex™-A9 processor clocked at up to 1 GHz and will also support HSPA+. By comparison, MT6573 is much inferior, because the used chip integrates an ARM11™ processor clocked at only 650 MHz. On the modem part, MT6573 chipset only supports data connections up to HSPA (speed of 7.2 Mbps / 5.76 Mbps).

Its expected that the first MT6575 based smartphone prototypes start appearing after the upcoming Chinese New Year. Lets wait then!

How To ROM Flashing 101 Loading A ROM To Your Phone Can Be Fun

ku-xlarge

Often times, we get our brand new smartphones but we don’t like all the bloatware that comes along with them. Perhaps we just don’t like the look of the UI and would rather have the stock Android experience. Sure you could just buy a Nexus, but maybe you like the device that you have for it’s features. The great thing about Android, is that you can easily load on a new custom version of the OS, by way of flashing a custom ROM to your device. I know what some of you might be thinking. “What’s a ROM?” Quite simply put, a ROM is a custom version of the Android OS, or otherwise aftermarket Android firmware that has been customized by someone in the development community. There can be many reasons for deciding to flash a custom ROM to your device. If not for the sweet custom experience with added features and cool tweaks made by the developer, at the very least for the fact that it can often times provide you with a stock android experience should you be looking for one. In this little how-to, we’re going to walk you through some easy steps on flashing a custom ROM to your device, so if you decide to take the plunge, you’ll know where to start. This guide is aimed at helping you complete the custom ROM process as easily and safely as possible, so make sure to go through the entire guide before you start.

Unlocking The bootloader/Flashing A Custom Recovery

Many Android devices come with locked bootloaders, so before moving forward the very first thing you’re going to have to do in most cases is unlock it. After this step is done you’ll need to make sure you flash a custom recovery. Although you don’t need to “Root” your device before you flash a custom ROM to it, (some ROMs even provide root access upon flashing them) it will certainly make the whole experience easier and then some. Since there are so many different Android phones out there, unlocking the Bootloader, rooting, and flashing the custom recovery is pretty much different for all of them. To make sure that you’re doing things correctly you’ll want to head over to the XDA Developers website and find some useful information about your specific device, and get the correct steps for your particular phone. Some are a little easier than others, and have specific tools to help walk you through the process or even do most of the work for you so long as you have the provided files. I’m speaking more generally for the Samsung devices which can usually use the popular program called Odin to do these processes, and Nexus devices which have the very hand Nexus Root Toolkit provided by the savvy WugFresh, a dev found on XDA. Past these two, the process to unlock the bootloader and get the custom recovery on your phone is pretty vast, so we can’t really go into specifics. We can however recommend a couple custom recovery’s for you, as they are the most popular and provide some of the best features. When ready to find the custom recovery tailored to your phone model, you’ll want to find either TWRP(Team Win Recovery Project), or ClockworkMod Recovery, both of which can be searched for via Google or also found on XDA.

Backing Up Your System And Important Data

Next, before we move onto ROMs and anything else, you’ll want to make sure to create a backup of the system image, this way if the whole entire process takes a turn for the worst you’ll have a backup of the OS in a safe state before the issues arose. Since you now have the custom recovery, you’ll be able to boot into it and flash the safe backup image should things go wrong. Also, just to be clear, this backup process does not have anything to do with backing up any of the data you had on your device prior to unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and flashing the recovery. Unlocking the bootloader WILL wipe your device, so make sure to do a backup of anything important that you don’t want to lose. (I.E. photos, music, notes, apps, etc.) Moving on, to achieve the backup of your system, referred to as a “Nandroid Backup”, you’ll have to boot into recovery mode, which is usually accomplished by pressing a series of hardware buttons simultaneously. The exact set of buttons you need to press to enter recovery is different from device to device, so be sure to make note of which buttons you need to press to get there. It should go without saying, but your device also needs to be “off” for you to boot into recovery using the hardware keys. Once you’re in recovery mode, navigate to the backup section and proceed to commence the process. The backup of the system image can take quite some time, so use this little bit of free time to collect your thoughts, think about your favorite movie, or even make a sandwich while you wait. When it’s all over, you’ll feel rewarded for having gotten this far without breaking something, and you’ll no longer be hungry! As unlocking the bootloader will usually wipe your device, and since that’s the first step to this guide, backing up your app, and app data isn’t really necessary at this point in time, but at some point in the future should you be switching custom ROMs, you can use an app like Titanium Backup to do all the app+data backups you need so you don’t lose a thing. Titanium Backup doe’s require root access, so make sure you’re rooted before you attempt to use it.

Finding, Downloading, And Flashing Your Custom ROM

Now the fun part, it’s time to download and flash your custom ROM of choice. The ROM community has come quite a long way since the early days of Cyanogenmod, (which was really the only custom firmware when it first released) and there are now many different custom ROMs available for your choosing. Some devices have many more ROM options than others, but the most popular ROMs usually have a build for just about anything. Once again, XDA is a great place to look if you want to find out what’s available for your device and often provides you with the downloadable files you’ll need to complete the ROM flashing process, ROM included. Some of the most popular ROMs available currently are of course, CyanogenMod, and also the Pacman ROM, AOKP, and Paranoid Android, just name a few. Many of these ROMs offer lots of custom UI tweaks and features that the stock version of Android nor the manufacturer version have out of box, and there is a flavor to suit just about every taste. Whether you want something completely minimal with a few minor additions, or you want complete customization with all kinds of new features, you can more than likely find something that you’ll love.

CyanogenMod and Paranoid Android are a couple of our favorites if you want a place to start. Once you find the ROM you like, make sure to download and eventually place it in the main directory of your internal SD card so you can get to it when you’re ready to flash. The downloaded ROM file will be in the form of a .ZIP, and this is what you want so don’t worry about unzipping it before you begin. Once you have the file in the correct place, (you can do this a couple ways. Either by connecting your phone to your computer and navigating to your phones storage drive, or by using a file manager app directly on the phone if you have downloaded the ROM .ZIP file using your phone’s browser. If you’re using a file manager, ES File manager, and Astro are a couple excellent choices) it’s time to boot back into recovery mode so you can begin the steps to flash the custom ROM.

Once in recovery mode there are few things you’ll want to do before you actually flash the ROM. First, it’s a good idea to wipe the dalvik cache(although not usually required), and then move on to completing the step “Wipe data/factory reset”. If you’re using the latest ClockworkMod Recovery, wiping the dalvik cache option will be located under “advanced settings”. Navigate to advanced by using your phone’s volume keys, then hit the power button to execute. Under advanced, wipe dalvik should be the fourth option down. Navigate to it and hit the power button to execute. When that’s all done,(which should only take like 10 seconds or less) get back to the main menu by navigating to the “go back” option and hit the power button. Once on the main menu, the “wipe data/factory reset” option should be the third option down. Navigate to it and hit the power button to execute. There’s no going back from here, so hopefully you made all the backups you needed. The wipe process usually only takes a minute or so.

Once the wipe has completed, the next step is to navigate to “install .zip from SD card” and hit the power button. Next, you’ll want to navigate to “choose .zip from SD card” and hit the power button again. If you stored the ROM in the correct directory, (the main directory of your internal SD card) you should be able to scroll and find the package file name of the ROM. Navigate to it, then hit the power button to begin the install. The install process will probably take at least a few minutes, and once it’s done you can navigate back to the main menu of the recovery and hit reboot. The first time you reboot your device after flashing a custom ROM, the boot process usually takes a little longer than normal, and sometimes several minutes, so don’t be alarmed. This is normal. If starts to bootloop, something in the process went wrong, (usually forgetting to wipe data is a commonly missed step)This can also be specified in the ROM information when you go to download the ROM file. Once all booted up, you’re almost done, theres just a couple more steps.

Flashing The Gapps Package For Play Store Access And Google Related Apps

Flashing a custom ROM can give you all sorts of fun new tweaks and UI features, but ROMs don’t come with the play store or google apps installed. This is why you have to flash the Gapps package file. This is a fairly simple process, especially since you’ve come this far. All you have to do is find and download the correct Gapps package file for your Android version and flash it the same way you flashed the ROM. You can find the correct Gapps package many places on the web, but the simplest way to this is one of two ways. Find the right file via XDA, or you can download and install an app called Gapps manager to help identify and locate the correct file of Gapps to download, (you can find and download Gapps manager here)Once you have the right file, place in the main directory of your internal SD card just like you did the with the ROM, and reboot into recovery mode to flash it. When flashing the Gapps package file, you do not have to wipe your data. Just navigate to install zip from sd card, then to choose zip from sd card like before and flash. Once that’s done, reboot your device and you’re good to go. That’s it! Now you can start playing with your new ROM and customizing everything to your liking. We hope this helped you understand the process on how to flash a custom ROM if you weren’t already aware of how to do so, and maybe even spark your interest in flashing ROMs in the future. As always, you assume full responsibility for doing any of the above processes to and we nor the devs are liable should anything happen to your device. That being said, if you follow all the instructions to the letter, you should be perfectly fine. Happy Flashing!
