Samsung Mobile SDK – Introducing the Complete Package

As mentioned in some of my earlier posts there are a lot of individual SDKs that Samsung has provided over time to the developers. All of these SDKs have been trying to provide things over and above the basic features provided by Android SDKs and some of them with specific focus on Samsung mobiles. However, recently Samsung has put them all together and released the Samsung Mobile SDK! It packages everything into one making it, that much easier for developers to work with.

Considering the fact that Samsung’s flagship Samsung Mobile SDK is now available and the fact that the latest application challenge thrown open by Samsung expects you to use this SDK’s Pen and Look package innovatively on Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and their Tablet Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition), here I am exploring a bit more of the Samsung Mobile SDKitself.

Apart from the 2 powerful packages Pen and Look, there are 8 more packages have been bundled together into the SDK. All of these APIs are over the Android API layer simplifying some of the tasks for application development on the Samsung phones, which have a huge share in the Android market.

Now, would it be useful to know a little more about each of these packages? Why should we use these packages against the default Android Packages?

Let me explain in brief what each of the packages provides.

1.     Chord package, I have explained in great detail in an earlier post of mine (And hence will not be dwelling further on it here).
2.     Image Filter package provides a varied set of features for image manipulation. It allows you to apply 33 filter effects, some of them with level adjustments. It also allows you to apply a level of transparency to your images.
3.     Pen package is mainly to deal with hand written input. It could be a pen like the one that comes with Samsung Note or just a finger. Apart from recognizing the input, it provides a way to edit, move around text and manipulate the same and even convert the same into a digital format. Brushes, colours and brush sizes are selectable. My next post will be a detailed one on using pen package in a sample code.
4.     Visual View is another package that is part of the SDK that provides various animations based on the OpenGL ES 2.0. It provides some basic animation, transition animation, key-frame animation, advanced geometry functions and a perspective view too.
a.     This is based on Android GLSurfaceView, which is in turn based on SurfaceView. So any code written for Android SurfaceViewcan be used with Visual View.
b.     The default Android animations from scene to scene offer only a blinking effect. However this offers 40 transitions!! Certainly a developers delight.
c.      A Visual View Slide offers a perspective view with a 3D space, with properties like Opacity, Shadow, Rotation etc. Something that would bring ‘gamification’ easily to enterprise apps as well.

All of the above packages are available for all Samsung devices. However, the ones mentioned below are available only on some of them.
1.     Gesture package allows you to capture events generated by hand movements.
a.     This uses the gesture sensor available on some devices. This is supported only on Android 4.3 or above.
b.     Hand movement can be recognised as up, down, left or right along with the angle. Based on that, actions like opening a specific app or playing a specific song etc. can be initiated.
2.     Look package offers specialised functions and widgets for the android view system.
a.     Look supports an editor that can be used with the pen package called the ‘WritingBuddy’.
b.     It also provides a concept of an ‘AirButton’ that is more like a quick access menu or a context sensitive menu that can be initiated by using a pen.
c.      It provides another exciting feature called the ‘SmartClip’ that helps in capturing screenshots or meta data of text and URLs and crop screenshots.
d.     It also provides a ‘PointerIcon’ feature to be able to change the look of the pointer icon when a pen is used in any application.
3.     Media Control is a package that allows you to save and retrieve media files from any DNLA (Digital Network Living Alliance) device.
a.     It provides basic functions of stop, pause, resume, seek for both music and video files that are stored on any DNLA network device
b.     It can seamlessly present still-images to a remote screen
4.     Motion is a package that allows you to use the ‘call motion’ and ‘Pedometer’ features.
a.     The call motion is triggered when you see a message or a number and move the device to the ear!
b.     The Pedometer captures data around the walking of a person with the mobile. It captures the speed, the distance, the calories etc. based on the height and weight of the user.
5.     MutliWindow allows you to run multiple windows with various applications simultaneously. This becomes useful with larger screen devices and almost gives you the power of a laptop in your palm!
a.     Multi instance tray bar is provided to handle the multiple windows that may be opened at any point
b.     It allows you to pair windows in the typical split style
c.      It allows you to resize application windows, minimize them, move or exit from a Window
6.     Professional Audio adds a high performance audio processing logic. Musical instruments can be created with relative ease.


With all of these wonderful packages together, a lot of creativity can be unleashed and I am sure the Samsung Smart App Challenge encourages the Android Developer Communityto use these in innovative ways.

Of all the packages, I am particularly interested in the possibilities with pen and look packages and so will be exploring how to write simple programs using the two of them in the next few posts.

Android Revolution HD on HTC London Event





On Tuesday, February 19th, 2013 in London there is something big going to happen. Weve all heard some rumors and seen leaked pictures, but there is nothing officially confirmed just yet. Our biggest expectation is to see new high-end HTC device called HTC One (HTC M7) running new user interface - HTC Sense 5.0. Maybe there is something more...

HTC decides to skip Android 4 4 4 update OTA based on 4 4 3 security fix coming soon


International version of the HTC One M8 is currently running Android 4.4.2 (1.54.401.10) but this will change very soon. According to the confirmed information, the new over-the-air (OTA) update with Android 4.4.3 will start rolling out late next week for the 0P6B10000 variant of the HTC One M8 with the following CID numbers: 

HTC__001, HTC__E11, HTC__102, HTC__203, HTC__405, HTC__Y13, HTC__304, HTC__A07, HTC__002, HTC__016, HTC__032, HTC__J15, HTC__M27, HTC__A48, HTC__K18.

What we know so far is that the update will be tagged as 2.2x.401.x and together with Android 4.4.3 it will bring slightly updated HTC Sense UI (HTC SDK API: 6.25) but the version of the launcher will remain 6.0, at least officially.
  • ro.build.id=KTU84L
  • ro.build.version.release=4.4.3
  • ro.com.google.gmsversion=4.4_r4
  • HTC SDK API: 6.25 (current latest M8 software is based on SDK 6.17) ---> this might indicate improved HTC Sense version
  • kernel version is still 3.4.0
Apart from the OS itself, almost every part of the firmware will be updated too.
  • Hboot: 3.18.0.0000
  • Radio: 1.19.21331147A1.09G
  • OpenDSP: 38.2.2-00542-M8974.0311
Why no Android 4.4.4 yet? Because HTC decided to include the security fixes known from Android 4.4.4 in their 4.4.3 release. For some reason this must be easier for the HTC if such path was chosen.

Also, whats worth to mention is that M8 owners who re-locked their previously unlocked devices using htcdev.com, after the Android 4.4.3 update might need to generate new unlock_code.bin token to unlock the device again. Apparently the identifier token wont be the same after the incoming OTA.

There are also some few more surprises coming from the HTC in the incoming update but we cant reveal it yet! :)

HTC ROM Update Utility RUU variants explanation

Owners of HTC devices might be a little confused when it comes to understanding the current method of numbering used by HTC to mark their software updates. Here you can find a short explanation of this matter.

First of all, we all know that HTC sells their devices all over the world. Every carrier and region of the world has some more or less different "local settings". By "local settings" I mean things like: emergency call numbers, languages, time-zone settings, network settings, carriers branding, GPS settings and more. Because of that each software for even the same device must be different.

Secondly, even the same device might use different hardware related to the region of the world. For example, HTC One is available in at least 6 different hardware configurations. One of the main difference is modem version. GSM version of the HTC One uses MDM8215 chip and LTE variant has MDM9215. Verizon (US) is known to have MDM9615. So thats already 3 different versions of the same device.

Every HTC update has the following numbering structure:

a.bb.ccc.d

a - the first number of the software. Normally it doesnt increase very often, but when it does, it usually means newer Android version.
bb - this number is also a software number. Increasing bb number means some more or less major update based on the same Android version, but sometimes it might even bring newer version of the HTC Sense.
ccc (also cc or cccc) - this is the number of the region/carrier. It has nothing to do with the software itself being newer or older. More details below.
d (sometimes dd) - the third part of the software version (the fourth one in the RUU name). Usually indicates some minor update with some hot fixes.


Example: 3.20.401.3

So basically, when you are interested in the software version, you should look at a.bb.d (3.20.ccc.3) because ccc (401) means only the region/carrier variant of the software.

The 401 and the 707 devices are usually the first ones that HTC prepare updates for. Carrier branded software is usually months after the WWE updates.

Finally, keep in mind that each software version is connected with the CID (Carrier ID) and MID (Model ID) of your device. That means you cant use whichever version you want, unless you have S-OFF on your device. Each ROM Update Utility.exe package will check your device details (bootloader version, MID and CID) before starting the update process.

How to Fix a corrupted DATA partition on the HTC One


Since the HTC One was released, Ive had a few users asking me to help them fix their broken device. They couldnt boot their system or access anything on the DATA partition from inside custom recovery. Why this happens so often on the HTC One I have no idea...

Here is a short guide explaining how to fix this problem without sending the device for repair under warranty.

Short Explanation

This method can be used to fix any other partition too, just remember about changing the mount point number - from "mmcblk0p37" to the relevant one. For example, the SYSTEM on the HTC One is "mmcblk0p35". In some rare cases the mkfs.ext4 attributes (like dir_nlink or resize_inode) might change too! To get a list of all eMMC mount points on HTC devices use the command cat /proc/emmc. Never format RAW partitions! This method can be used only to format EXT4 partitions. Not following the guide properly might end in permanent damage to your device. I do not take any responsibility for that.

Some people might also find this helpful in case of need to remove the entire contents of the virtual SD-card. As long as the virtual SD-card is not a separate partition, (i.e. it is emulated space on the DATA partition [/data/media]) it cant be formatted - only wiped clean. How Do I Recognise The Problem?

When trying to mount the DATA partition from inside the custom recovery using the mount /data command you will most likely see this output: mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p37 on /data failed: Invalid argument

To be 100% sure you can check filesystem structure with the following command: /sbin/e2fsck -n -f /dev/block/mmcblk0p37

Repair Process

Note: the content of your DATA partition will be lost, including the contents of your virtual SD-card! I also assume you already have custom recovery flashed and you are a Windows user - LINUX people please amend as needed.
  1. Download this mini-sdk package and extract it to c:mini-sdk
  2. Download this mkfs.ext4 binary and put it into c:mini-sdk
  3. Connect your device to the PC
  4. Boot your device in recovery mode
  5. Open a command prompt on the PC (cmd.exe), type and confirm each command with ENTER:
  6. cd /d c:mini-sdk
  7. adb push mkfs.ext4 /tmp
  8. adb shell
  9. chmod 777 /tmp/mkfs.ext4
  10. /tmp/mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 -O ^huge_file,^dir_nlink,^ext_attr,^resize_inode,^extra_isize -m 0 /dev/block/mmcblk0p37

Now your DATA partition will be formatted. It is not the same as "wiping", which is only removing all or just some files from particular partition. Formatting means that the entire partition will be re-created with the above attributes. You should see the following output:

This filesystem will be automatically checked every 25 mounts or 180 days, whichever comes first. 
Use tune2fs -c or -i to override.
Your DATA partition is now completely empty, so we need to copy our particular ROM zip file there:
  1. Copy ROM zip file to c:mini-sdk and rename it to "rom.zip"
  2. In the same command prompt window type and confirm each command with ENTER:
  3. mount /data
  4. mkdir -p /data/media/0
  5. exit
  6. adb push rom.zip /data/media/0
Copying rom.zip to the device will take a few minutes. Wait until its done. The output should be: xxxx KB/s (xxxxxxxxxx bytes in xxx.xxxs)Now you can flash rom.zip from inside custom recovery. Done!

HTC One review part 1 Design

I used to think that we were in an era when all smartphones with big screens looked more or less the same. Because if youre honest, what can be changed in the front of the device, if 90 to 95% of its surface is just touch screen? Oh dear, I was so wrong. HTC One is a true masterpiece of art. However, this review will also show some weak points of the newest HTC premium device. Yes there are some shortcomings, but we are not living in an ideal world so you wont ever find a perfect product: it doesnt matter if its just a smartphone, a computer or even a car. People have different tastes or expectations and this wont ever change. But HTC One can surely satisfy more people then any other device before. Lets start from the beginning.

Design

HTC put in a lot of effort to make this device look amazing - efforts which have been a great success. However, design was never a weak point of HTC devices. As far back as I remember, HTC devices were always one step ahead of the competition when it came to the design and form innovation. So for me, it is not a surprise that HTC One sets a new standard of build quality and design.  

Gaps
However, some users are reporting a wide gap between its plastic and metal surfaces. I dont have any on mine, but as far as I know this problem is not a matter of just few devices. So right after you buy yours, make sure it doesnt have any gaps. Is it something that should stop you from buying HTC One? Surely not. It is normal in every production process that sometimes there are some manufacturing issues. On the other hand, it seems that HTC quality testing department is not working very well, if units with gaps are passing build flaw tests. HTC One is a premium device for a premium price, so as a customer, you have a right to expect a gap free product (especially since HTC advertised the device as "gap free"). If you have noticed any, go to the store where you bought your device and exchange it for a gap free unit.

Made from one piece of aluminium
HTC One is known to be made from aluminium with a unibody construction. You can have a silver model or a black one at the moment (more colours are rumoured to be on the way). I can tell you that both look amazing. The black device looks to be more solid, but silver gives you a better, more premium look and feel. Not much to discuss when it comes to colours, because its a matter of a taste of each user. No removable battery - no problem
The unibody design has some particular consequences. First of all, you cant remove or change the battery inside the HTC One. Is it an issue? Personally, I never found it to be a problem. There are methods to switch off the device completely without removing the battery - a combination of power + volume buttons. Also, I shared my thoughts on this topic here - Removable battery - do we really need it? Its been a while already since the HTC One has been on the market and its a best-selling product, despite its non-removable battery. Does this mean a removable battery is not that important in the end?

Of course I understand some arguments against having a non-removable battery. But there are always two sides of an argument and Im not here to judge which side is better. Personally I just prefer unibody design, mostly because I see no reason to replace or remove the battery inside the device.


No micro-SD card - no problem either
It seems that no micro-SD card slot is also a consequence of having such a design. However, I can imagine that a micro-SD card could be used the same way as micro-SIM card is and it wont make it impossible to have a unibody design. On the other hand I also dont find any reasonable arguments to have a micro-SD card. The vast majority of users dont need more then 32 GB of available space. If you want to know more details about Android and internal memory you can read my article here - Virtual SD card on Android. HTC One is not supposed to be your personal media storage - for that you should buy a mini-PC with an mATX motherboard and 2x2TB HDDs connected with RAID. If the internal storage on your HTC One is full, backup some pictures or music onto your PC (or use USB OTG).


What to improve
Is there room for some improvements? Yes, I think there is. First of all, the design of the hardware buttons is not really comfortable. Having the power button on the top of such big device is not the best solution. Also, the power button itself is too small and it doesnt protrude enough from the surface, so its quite hard sometimes to press it. Maybe its because of the IR sensor built into the button that they were stuck with this design. I believe that having a power button located on the right hand side of the device (like on Nexus devices) and volume buttons on the left hand side would be a much better solution.

Secondly, the build of the front speaker grilles. These tiny holes can get clogged very easily. I cant think of an alternate solution at the moment; I guess its just the downside of having a smartphone with amazing sound capabilities, known as HTC BoomSound™.

The last biggest design flaw I found are capacitive buttons. There are just 2 buttons - home and back button. It is already confirmed that under the HTC logo there is a touch sensor as well, and with the new "logo2menu" feature available in most custom kernels for HTC One it is possible to assign the HTC logo as a menu button. I think that the trend to have fewer buttons on smartphones comes from Apple - but iOS is a completely different operating system with a much simpler UI, and its quite impossible to make the Android user experience that simple. Having just 2 capacitive buttons brings some negative consequences, for instance there is significant confusion about different "long-press" and "double-tap" combinations. For example, to activate the menu function you need to long press the Home button. To display "Recent Applications" you need to quickly tap twice on the Home button. Wouldnt it be easier for the end users to have 3 buttons instead of just 2, where one of them can be used in 3 different ways?

- 1 tap = home

- 2 tap = recent apps
- long tap = menu



Im writing this review using Android 4.2.2 on my HTC One. On Android 4.1.2 it was less complicated, but somehow worse, because without the possibility to assign a long tap on the home button as "menu", you would have to deal with an ugly black "action overflow" button at the bottom of the display, the result of application developers failing to implement the appropriate Android SDK (level 11 or higher). Such a button takes about 10% of the screen space and in some cases it does absolutely nothing. You can disable it by proper system modification (qemu.hw.mainkeys=1) but then you wouldnt be able to access the apps settings if the particular app doesnt support Android SDK level 11+. I believe that the perfect combination of capacitive buttons would be following:

- Back button
---> short press = back
---> long press = kill recent app

- Home button


- Menu button

---> short press = home
---> long press = recent apps


Shiny edges
Coming back to overall design, I forgot to mention that I really like the shining aluminium edges of the One. Its much more visible on the silver version, which is also known to be less susceptible to fingerprints. This is a really awesome effect, and there is no phone on the market that looks as good as the HTC One. Say no to plastic!

Heat dissipation
Apart from premium looks, the aluminium unibody brings one more very important feature. It works as a natural, huge radiator, taking out heat from inside your device. I can definitely tell that the HTC One is running much cooler than the HTC One X or One X+. The included "System on a Chip" is part of the reason, but the aluminium body helps a lot in dissipating any heat that does build up.



Camera
Camera housing is flat in HTC One, and its very good move from HTC. In HTC One X/X+ camera housing protrudes from the phone body and it was very easy to scratch it. It seems that HTC took seriously users feedback in that matter.





Verdict

There is a lot of marketing effort behind the HTC One, but this time its one of those rare occasions where advertising doesnt lie. The HTC One is a premium product, with unique and completely amazing design. If youre looking for a smartphone that will gain people attention on the street, the HTC One fits perfectly. But design is not all - it also has great hardware inside, but this is a material for part 2 of this review, coming in a few days!
