Stock system dumps Android 4 3 with HTC Sense 5 5 for HTC One

Very important update is out since yesterday for HTC One user. Android Revolution HD 30.0 - the world first custom ROM based on Android 4.3 & HTC Sense 5.5 for HTC One is available for download on XDA-Developers thread. However, there is always one problem when it comes to HTC updates - no RUUs (ROM Update Utility) officially available for download for regular users (HTC One Developer Edition and Google Edition seems to be the only exceptions). Why RUU is that important to us? I already made a short explanation here, but lets remind that again.

RUU (.exe) files for MS Windows are installers of complete firmware, including for example system or data partitions. Not having latest RUU means:
  1. users using custom ROMs cant download latest OTA from HTC,
  2. developers have no system dumps they can work with.
Ad. 1) If you want to download and flash latest OTA, your device must have completely stock system partition and recovery. Every OTA update is checking MD5 of each file on system partition to ensure .apk patch can be applied. If even one of 1000 files wont match, OTA update installation will fail. In this case you need to flash the latest official update you can find (even one year old) and later download official OTA updates.

Ad. 2) There are few workarounds, however none of them is as good as having a RUU:
  • adb pull /system in custom recovery mode*
  • cp /system /data/media/dump in custom recovery mode*
  • nandroid backup
  • boot partition can be taken from inside firmware.zip inside OTA .zip package or it can be dumped using dd if=</path/to/boot/partition> of=/data/media/boot.img
adb pull, cp or dd commands must be executed from custom recovery mode, otherwise system dump will be missing few important files or these files will have 0kb size. Also, keep in mind that adb features are heavily limited on stock un-rooted device. In case of dd command, root access (su) is needed to make such operation.

Thats why I created my own stock system dumps (as a custom recovery .zip packages) for some HTC devices. I believe this can save a lot of time for many XDA users and developers.

Introducing the Google Drive plug in for Microsoft Office

(Cross-posted on the Google Drive Blog.)

With Google Drive, you can keep all your important files in one place, then open them with your choice of apps and devices. Building on this open approach, we recently made it possible to launch your favorite desktop applications directly from Google Drive. And today we’re taking it a step further by bringing Google Drive to Microsoft Office.

Using the new Google Drive plug-in, people using Office for Windows can now open their Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents stored in Drive, then save any changes back to Drive once they’re done.
If you’re working on a document, spreadsheet or presentation that’s on your computer, you can also save that file to Google Drive, directly from the Office apps. This is especially useful for sharing files with teams, or for accessing your files across devices.
With this plug-in, you can use the apps you’re already comfortable with, while benefitting from the security and convenience of Google Drive.

HTC Sense 7 0 Priority Ringtones

Continuing observations regarding the new HTC Sense 7.0 features its time to take a look at another very interesting aspect of the new HTC user interface - the Priority Ringtones. Priority Ringtones probably replaced the "DND" (Do Not Disturb) function as I cant find it any more in the Quick Settings menu. So how does it work?

To configure the Priority Ringtones you need use volume buttons. The volume slider UI is similar to the one known from the HTC Sense 6.0, however at the bottom of the box you can find 3 new buttons - "NONE", "PRIORITY" and "ALL". Volume settings menu after clicking the settings icon on the right part of the box looks exactly the same as in previous Sense version.

None

Using the first option - "NONE" simply means you will receive absolutely no sound notifications. Not even the alarms. In that mode your device is not allowed to give any sound. You can set this mode to be active for a particular time (15min, 30 min, 45 min, 1h, 2h, 3h, 4h, 8h) or indefinitely, meaning it will be active as long as you disable it.

Priority

In Priority mode you can basically choose what type of events, reminders, calls or messages (and from who) are allowed to interrupt you. You can choose to receive calls or messages from everyone, contacts only or favourite contacts only. You can also configure the days the priority mode is enabled by default (from Monday till Sunday) and hours - start hour and end hour.

All

The "ALL" mode simply means you will receive every kind of notification. In this mode everything gives a sound - alarm, phone call, message, notification, reminder etc. This mode is enabled by default.

If by any chance you havent yet read my previous HTC Sense 7.0 related articles heres a short reminder:
  • HTC Sense 7.0 - Wallpapers
  • HTC Sense 7.0 - Custom Navigation Bar
  • HTC Sense 7.0 - Themes Generator
  • HTC Sense 7.0 - Sense Home with Smart Folders
  • HTC Sense 7.0 - Photo Editor

Google Cardboard Seriously Fun

As simple as they are, cardboard boxes are pretty great. Maybe you transformed one into a fort or castle growing up. Or maybe your kids took last week’s package delivery and turned the box into a puppet theater. The best part about cardboard is that it can become anything—all you need is your imagination.

It’s this same spirit that inspired our team to turn a smartphone, and some cardboard, into a virtual reality (VR) viewer earlier this year. Suddenly, exploring the Palace of Versailles was as easy as opening an app. And the response was kind of delightful.

We’ve been working to improve Google Cardboard ever since. And today—with more than half a million Cardboard viewers in people’s hands—weve got a fresh round of updates for users, developers, and makers.
For users: more apps to enjoy, and more places to buy

There are now dozens of Cardboard-compatible apps on Google Play, and starting today we’re dedicating a new collection page to some of our favorites. These VR experiences range from test drives to live concerts to fully-immersive games, and they all have something amazing to offer. So give ‘em a try today, and download the new Cardboard app to watch the collection grow over time.
Example apps for Cardboard (clockwise, from top left): Vanguard V 3D game, Paul McCartney concert, and Tilt Brush gallery.

If you don’t have a Cardboard viewer yet, you can now pick one up from DODOcase, I Am Cardboard, Knoxlabs, and Unofficial Cardboard. And of course you can always build your own (with new specs below!).

For developers: SDKs for Android and Unity

If you’ve ever tried creating a VR application, then you’ve probably wrestled with issues like lens distortion correction, head tracking, and side-by-side rendering. It’s important to get these things right, but they can suck up all your time—time you’d rather spend on gameplay or graphics.

We want to give you that time back, so today we’re introducing Cardboard SDKs for Android and Unity. The SDKs simplify common VR development tasks so you can focus on your awesome, immersive app. And with both Android and Unity support, you can use the tools you already know and love. Download the SDKs today, and check out apps like Caaaaardboard! and Tilt Brush Gallery to see what’s already possible.

For makers: tool-specific specs, and custom viewer calibration

To help bring VR experiences to everyone, we open sourced a Cardboard viewer specification earlier this year. Since then we’ve seen all sorts of viewers from all sorts of makers, and today we’re investing in this community even further.

For starters, we’re publishing new building specs with specific cutting tools in mind. So whether you’re laser- or die-cutting your Cardboard viewers in high quantities, or carving single units with a blade, we’ve got you covered.

Once you’ve got your custom viewer, we also want to help you tailor the viewing experience to its unique optical layout. So early next year we’ll be adding a viewer calibration tool to the Cardboard SDK. You’ll be able to define your viewer’s base and focal length, for example, then have every Cardboard app adjust accordingly.

For the future: watch this space, and we’re hiring

The growth of mobile, and the acceleration of open platforms like Android make it an especially exciting time for VR. There are more devices, and more enthusiastic developers than ever before, and we can’t wait to see what’s next! We’re also working on a few projects ourselves, so if you’re passionate about VR, you should know we’re hiring.

Here’s to the cardboard box, and all the awesome it brings.

Allowing end users to install your app from Google Apps Marketplace

by Chris Han, Product Manager Google Apps Marketplace

The Google Apps Marketplace brings together hundreds of third-party applications that integrate and enhance Google Apps for Work. Previously, only administrators were able to install these applications directly for people at work. Now, any Google Apps user can install these applications by logging into Google Apps, clicking the app launcher icon , clicking More, and then clicking More from Apps Marketplace. By default, any Google Apps user can install apps from the Google Apps Marketplace—excluding K-12 EDU domains that are defaulted off. For more information, please see our Help Center
If you have an app in the Google Apps Marketplace utilizing oAuth 2.0, you can follow the simple steps below to enable individual end users to install your app. If you’re not yet using oAuth 2.0, instructions to migrate are here.

1. Navigate to your Google Developer Console.
2. Select your Google Apps Marketplace project.
3. Click APIs under the APIs & auth section.
4. Click the gear icon next to Google Apps Marketplace SDK.
5. Check Allow Individual Install.

Tripping com increases traffic and revenue to its vacation rental site with Google Maps APIs

Editors note: Today’s guest blogger is Danny Chi, director of engineering at Tripping.com. Read how Tripping.com and Google for Work Partner Navagis used Google Maps APIs to improve user experience and increase Tripping.com’s revenue and traffic – which has gone up by more than 2,000% over the past 12 months.

At Tripping.com, we aggregate vacation rentals from dozens of sites to help vacationers find the right listing from more than five million properties in 150,000 destinations. Our goal is to make it the worlds largest website for researching vacation homes and short-term rentals.

To do that, we need to create the best customer experience to drive traffic and to turn website visitors into guests. That’s why we chose the Google Maps APIs, which let us build an easy-to-use interface with fast loading times and the ability to scale. The APIs also allow the maps to zoom in and out, and accurately confirm rental addresses from the sites we search.

Going with Google Maps APIs gave us access to vast and accurate location data. We also tapped into a world-class ecosystem of partners by choosing Google for Work Partner Navagis to help with licensing and technical advice on how best to start using Google Maps APIs.

When a user visits Tripping.com, they search for where and when they plan to vacation. We send the search to multiple vacation-rental sites, and we use the Google Maps JavaScript API to layer the results onto a Google Map. The left side of the screen displays the map with pins. The right side of the screen displays a photo of each rental. Users can click a pin to display the photo of the rental, and click the photo for more details and to complete their booking.

The Google Places API helps the site automatically scale the map to match searches. For example, if the user searches rentals in Paris, the Places API indicates the correct zoom level to display listings. If, instead, he searches for the Eiffel Tower, it will do a tighter zoom. The Places API also helps ensure accurate address data since in some cases the rental owners don’t provide complete address information.

With the help of the Google Maps APIs, Tripping.com’s traffic has grown 2,918%, to more than two million unique monthly visitors. So thanks to the Google Maps APIs, we’re not only keeping our visitors happy—we’re also seeing great business benefits as well.
